About Bundala National Park

Bundala National Park is one of the premier birdwatching sites on the island in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, close to Hambantota,  

It was first declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and subsequently raised to National Park status in 1993. Also Bundala was awarded Ramsar status in 1991. The park is found 251km southeast of Colombo and is well connected from all regions of the country. Travelers arriving from Colombo can take the route through Galle, Matara, and Hambantota, while those from Kandy can pass through Badulla. The region experiences a hot and dry climate during May to September. The park is particularly popular for birdwatching with a large number of migratory birds arriving between September and March.

Bundala National Park is a proud fourth Sri Lankan UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its amazing wetland birdlife. It also boasts a good variety of birds, ranging from the tiny bee-eaters to the majestic open-billed storks and the rarely seen black-necked stork. Large groups of over 1,000 Greater flamingos are common, accompanied by numerous other species of birds. Other than its resident birdlife, Bundala also hosts a richly varied ecosystem to maintain, made up of 48 reptile species, 52 butterfly species, 15 amphibian species, and 32 mammal species. There are other fish, invertebrates, and wildlife that infuse the park, making it a heaven for nature & photography lovers
