Wilpattu National Park, located in the northwest of Sri Lanka, is the island’s largest and one of its most important wildlife sanctuaries, spanning approximately 1,317 square kilometres. Wilpattu, the oldest and the biggest Sri Lankan National Park, consists of a complex of shallow lakes called ‘villus’.  It is home to a wide range of species, including the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, and an impressive variety of birds and reptiles. The park offers breath-taking landscapes of dense forests, open grasslands, and wetlands.

Wilpattu National Park is open throughout the year, but the most popular time to visit is June to early October. Dry weather brings wildlife out to more easily seen lakes. The biggest attraction, Sri Lankan leopard sightings are more common here than in any other Sri Lankan game parks.

Throughout the day, spot the elusive Sri Lankan leopards, herds of elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, and water buffalo, as well as over 200 species of birds, including eagles and colorful kingfishers. Wilpattu is also home to crocodiles, monitor lizards, and various endemic species, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
