3-Hour Minneriya Jeep Safari Adventure From $ 80
Minneriya National Park, situated in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, is centered around the ancient Minneriya Tank, constructed by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. Spanning a diverse landscape of dry tropical forests, grasslands, and wetlands, the park serves as a crucial dry-season habitat for elephants migrating from the Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. Minneriya is also part of one of Sri Lanka’s 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs), supporting a variety of bird species. Covering an area rich in biodiversity, the park plays a vital role in protecting the tank’s catchment and sustaining the region’s wildlife. It is located 182 km from Colombo.
Minneriya National Park lies in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, receiving an annual rainfall of 1,500–2,000 mm. Temperatures range from 20.6 °C (69.1 °F) to 34.5 °C (94.1 °F). The park’s main water source is the historic Minneriya Tank, fed by the Amban River and the Elahera canal. The wet season occurs from October to January with the northeastern monsoon, while the dry season lasts from May to September. Minneriya features diverse habitats, including low-canopy montane forests, high-canopy secondary forests, scrublands, grasslands, abandoned chena lands, wetlands, and rocky outcrops, supporting a wide range of wildlife.
Elephant Gathering
During the dry season, Minneriya National Park becomes a sanctuary for large herds of Sri Lankan elephants, with numbers ranging from 150–200 and occasionally reported as high as 700. These majestic animals are drawn to the grass fields around the Minneriya Tank, which sustains them with food and water. Many elephants migrate from nearby Wasgamuwa National Park, taking refuge in Minneriya’s forests. This remarkable gathering, often referred to as “The Gathering,” is a major attraction for tourists, particularly during the dry season.
Fauna
Minneriya National Park is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies. This biodiversity makes it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
Other Animals
Minneriya National Park is a crucial habitat for Sri Lanka’s two endemic monkey species: the purple-faced langur and the toque macaque. The park also supports large herbivorous mammals, including the Sri Lankan sambar deer and Sri Lankan axis deer. Rare and endangered species such as the Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear are found here. Additionally, Minneriya is one of the few locations in Sri Lanka where the elusive gray slender loris has been reported. The park’s diverse wildlife makes it a significant conservation area in Sri Lanka.
The Minneriya reservoir provides a vital habitat for large water birds like the lesser adjutant, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican. The park hosts both resident and migratory bird species, including flocks of little cormorants, great white pelicans, and grey herons. Endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl, hanging parrot, and grey hornbill are also found here. Amphibians like Fejervarya pulla and Polypedates cruciger thrive in the area, while endemic reptiles, including the painted-lip lizard and Lankascincus fallax, inhabit the park. Additionally, four species of freshwater fish are unique to Sri Lanka.
